Refuge accommodation
BWA runs six refuges, three family refuges and three specialist refuges. The specialist refuges comprise project for women who have mental health issues, a refuge for single women, and a refuge for long-stay women. We provide 36 adult bed spaces and 45-50 child spaces. We provide advice and support in a wide range of areas to empower women to take control of their lives and make positive changes. On entering a refuge, women are assigned a Refuge Officer, who will work with them to produce a Support Plan, outlining their needs and goals for action. For more information see our “Information Leaflet for Women Moving into BWA Refuges”.
Child support services
Communal activities are arranged by the Child Support Officer to help rebuild children’s confidence and self-esteem. These include after school clubs and leisure or educational activities. These services have a vital role in helping women and their children adapt to their changing circumstances and re-location.
Outreach, resettlement and move-on
Through the outreach service, BWA provides general emotional, practical advice and support in the community for women experiencing Domestic Violence. This service is also provided for women experiencing domestic abuse at home, but for whom safe housing is inappropriate or unnecessary. BWA assists women with move-on and Resettlement process.
Networking, talks and training
BWA works closely with partner agencies, local authority departments and attends promotional events. The staff team work towards raising awareness and addressing the impact of Domestic Violence on women and their children. They regularly fundraise to cover the costs of children’s activities.
